Reviews and Praise for Shareware Heroes

Holy fast and fun read! I just plowed through all the pages like doing a Duke 3D speedrun! Even though I lived a LOT of this, there were so many details I wasn't aware of, or had long forgotten about. This book is like a museum of history you get to walk through. Loved every page of it.

Shareware was the birth of the original indie scene, and look back, I'm shocked at how well we (Apogee, plus id and Epic) all did. We really did start an indie revolution that continues to this day.

- Scott Miller, Apogee & 3D Realms founder

Shareware Heroes ... attempts the daunting task of presenting a history of shareware by telling the stories of all the people involved in it. That's the equivalent of trying to follow all the separate threads in a bowl of spaghetti. But Moss, admirably, manages it.

- from a review by Robert Purchese at Eurogamer

It’s the text that draws the reader into the book, though, and this is where Moss definitely delivers. As with his previous book, a passion for the topic comes through loud and clear, and a great balance between factual info-dump (with a small number of forgivable errors) and entertaining narrative is drawn.

- from a review by Gareth Halfacree at CustomPC Magazine

This is a fine history on the subject and one that should, in my humble opinion, be the reference book on the topic for years to come. It certainly informed me as to the nature, breadth and depth of shareware, and did tug a few almost forgotten memories from my teenage years and early PC usage.

- from a review by Andrew Oyston

Reading about the history of shareware really took me back to my youth and the feeling of discovering new games on a compilation disk or from a friend...It’s a fantastic cosy read for any child of the shareware gaming era.

- from a review by Peter Bridger

Had a free day on the couch due to my knee giving out, so read your book.... A really good read even for a non-participant. Great research, and good flowing text giving information. Good job. Would be happy to pay for the next book!!!
